The Hill MUSIC & MEMORY℠ program at Salemtowne enriches the lives of residents who have a wide range of cognitive and physical challenges through the gift of therapeutic music. Activities staff and volunteers have been trained to create personalized music playlists for residents using iPods or other digital devices thereby enabling them to engage with the world through music-triggered memories.
Favorite music or songs associated with important personal events can elicit memories of lyrics and the experience connected to the music. Beloved music often calms chaotic brain activity and enables the listener to focus on the present moment and find renewed meaning and connection in their lives.
Founded in 2006, MUSIC & MEMORY℠ is a non-profit organization grounded in neuroscience research with consistent results showing improved quality of life for residents. Some of the therapeutic benefits of personalized music are:
- Increases cooperation and attention
Enhances engagement and socialization, fostering a calmer social environment
Provides a valuable tool for the effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety medications
