Firsts

The Moravian settlers of this community were a talented, enterprising and courageous people. These characteristics are evident in our population today. Winston-Salem is a city of firsts.
  • 1753 - Winston-Salem – leader in the crafts movement.

  • 1778 - Nation’s oldest continuously operating brass band was formed in Salem.

  • 1789 - American classical music was first written in Salem (John Frederick Peter, composer).

  • 1946- Winston-Salem has the oldest city symphony in North Carolina.

  • 1948 - R. Philip Hanes, Winston-Salem’s cultural affairs commissioner, was one of the leaders who established the nation’s first arts council, as well as the arts council movement in the United States.

  • 1965 – The nation’s first residential high school and college for the performing arts – N.C. School of the Arts (NCSA).

  • 1998 – The first film school in the world to be built inside a film set was dedicated in Winston-Salem.

  • 2001- First mother and daughter to be nominated for a Tony Award in theatre – Winston-Salem’s Rosemary Harris and Jennifer Ehle.
