Important Accomplisments
  • World’s finest collection of 18th century European classical music (Moravian Music Foundation)
  • Largest collection of motion picture films other than the Library of Congress (North Carolina School of the Arts)
  • 17th oldest and 38th largest community Foundation in the United States (The Winston-Salem Foundation)

Moravians are credited with influencing the Piedmont crafts movement. As potters and cabinetmakers, they helped lay the foundation for the furniture manufacturing industry in this region, which continues to prosper. From Hickory, located west of Winston-Salem, to High Point, Lexington and points in between, find not only furniture at terrific prices, but textiles too.

Industries such as Reynolds Tobacco and the Hanes companies also shaped Winston-Salem by bringing remarkable wealth into the city and endowing it with an impressive list of institutions and foundations.

In 1913, the Moravian settlement of Salem and the commercial center of Winston joined, forming the “Twin City” of Winston-Salem. The city is now part of the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, which also includes Greensboro to the east and High Point to the south.

Joined by these other Triad communities, Winston-Salem is consistently ranked by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the country’s best areas to start and grow a small business. Winston-Salem is known nationally for its diversity of business and high-tech industries. This community has also had a longstanding reputation as a center of culture and arts with per capita contributions to the arts that historically rank number one in the nation.
