alemtowne believes that residents can enhance and maintain their quality of life by participating in fitness programs and activities. Residents at all stages of life participate in a range of health promotion activities and preventive health services such as annual mammograms, vaccinations for flu, tuberculosis and pneumonia, and nutritionally balanced diets.
Our full-time wellness coordinator leads programs and classes in the fitness center, a state-of-the-art facility with exercise equipment designed for persons over 55, a swimming pool and whirlpool. Free weights
are available as well as floor exercises. Fitness
classes are scheduled for residents of varying physical abilities
both in the water and on land. More than half of all independent
living residents participate in the fitness classes offered
each week. Features of our fitness center include:
 - Francis and Lisetta Fries Pool: An indoor 50' x 24' heated
pool with easy access for water exercise, free swim and therapies.
- Equipment Room: Offering a variety of exercise equipment
designed for strength, toning and cardio-respiratory exercises.
- Land exercise room: Designed for classes concentrating
on functional fitness.
- Men's and women's locker rooms, a nourishment center and
lounge.
Salemtowne also maintains a relationship with the Wake Forest
University Department of Health and Exercise Science. The school
includes residents in fitness studies and offers its students
as volunteers in Salemtowne's fitness programs.
On-campus Clinic
Wellness extends beyond the fitness center to meet the day-to-day health needs of residents. The medical director is a full-time physician who may also serve as the primary physician for residents throughout the campus. Clinic hours are available for Independent and Assisted Living residents to see the physician, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse by appointment during the week. Health Care residents are seen by the physician in the Health Care Center.
Residents may visit the clinic for:
- Routine blood pressure checks
- On-site delivery of prescribed medications
- Medication questions
- Emergency lab work
- Dressing changes or to simply consult a nurse about a specific health question or complaint.
A Podiatrist visits the clinic once a month. An Optometrist visits two times a month and has an onsite optical shop available. Nursing staff are on-call 24 hours a day in the health care center to handle emergency medical needs.
Therapy Services
Salemtowne makes available extensive therapy services to all residents on campus through a contracted therapy provider. Those services include:
- Physical Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Therapy
Licensed therapists and assistants work with residents in the Therapy Room that is specifically designed for mobility training.
