Daily Diary: A
Sampling of Life Among the Residents of Salemtowne
Getting There was Half the Fun
Nineteen residents, 15 of them in our
new, smooth riding, quiet bus, went cruising to the Depot restaurant
in nearby Dobson. The first challenge was to creep through a
covered bridge on the entry drive. I measured the inside width
of the bridge by my shoe lengths and the height by a handy tree
branch. It looked possible. Henry folded back the rear view mirrors
and squeezed though with nary a scratch.
Visitors - Both Welcomed and Not!
"Grandma, can I study at your place?" E.B. could ask for no better compliment than that of her grandson Elliot, who holds an engineering degree from the University of Virginia and is now preparing for exams to enter pre-med.
M.P.'s visitor wasn't so welcome. She saw a small rabbit nibbling
on her Hibiscus so she doused the plant with Texas Pete hot sauce.
Next morning the whole thing was eaten down to the roots: evidently
a Mexican rabbit - not Peter, but Pablo!
Residents Traveling To and Fro'
I was crossing paths with Lorene in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, of all places! Lorene was looking forward to a week of visiting with family while I was homeward bound from Houston and the wedding of my niece. Lili-the Hurricane threatened to be an uninvited wedding guest, but fizzled out like an unwanted party-pooper should. Born and bred in Texas, Lorene considers it the most beautiful state in the union. Being a native Tar Heel, I could give her an argument, but I like her too much!
You're the most mobile crowd I've ever met and the most taciturn
about your travels. It takes a private eye to uncover bits like
L.P.'s week in Jamaica. Early in November she joined friends
from the church in the mountains near Montego Bay to pursue mission
work.
More Fun than Life in the Movies…
The Great Grease Pot Caper was equally
exciting as watching the cupola go up on the community center
a year ago! 10,000 lbs. of cement had to be lifted over Bahnson
Hall into a pit in the courtyard - veee-ry carefully!
The Friday "do" was a wholloping success! Two couples
of friends came and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought they'd
never go home. I kept saying, "This was just from 5 to 7
- it's over now, ok?" No
one seemed to want to leave.
I wasn't this busy when I worked. Then I managed to get the spirit,
make and send out cards, bake & make goodies for all, and even
do a bit of visiting while spreading the cheer. I had time to
read for fun, talk on the phone, jump in the car and whiz out
of town for the day, spend weekends with the children...retirement
is for the birds. Give me back my full time job!!! |
