ommunity involvement is an essential ingredient in Salemtowne's
success. We believe it's our responsibility to give back to
the community we call home, making it a better place for all
of us to live. Salemtowne residents and staff identify needs
beyond our own community and work to make life better for others
through educational programs, volunteerism, financial contributions
and community building activities.
Recent demonstrations of
our commitment to the community include the following programs offered through Salemtowne:
National Senior Health and Fitness Day
This annual
event includes an evening of programming with health and nutrition
experts followed by a day of fitness training and exercise
in Salemtowne's fitness center and pool.
Adventures in Learning
Adventures in Learning is
a six-week program of interesting courses and challenging classes
designed to stimulate the mind and invigorate the body. Offered
by the Shepherd's Center, classes are lead by an outstanding
faculty of local experts and leaders in their field.
Lecture Series
Salemtowne frequently hosts lectures
on special topics of interest to the community. Before the
start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Salemtowne hosted a
public lecture series on religion in America, featuring Dr.
Carlton Mitchell, a local expert and Salemtowne resident.
End of Life Care Seminars
In partnership with Hospice & Palliative
Care Center, Salemtowne offers seminars to engage the community
to share and learn about the issues that will confront everyone
in the latter stages of life.
Elderlaw & Financial
Strategies Workshops
Experts
from the community help seniors and their families understand
the complexities of growing older when dealing with legal issues
and the financial markets.
Aging Outreach Program
Salemtowne
developed an award-winning outreach
campaign to help educate older adults about how to prepare
for life in retirement. The seven part educational series was published in the Winston-Salem Journal for 14 consecutive weeks,
discussing different aspects of retirement. Since the
effort began, more than 2,500 booklets on the subject have
been distributed to seniors and their families.
Care Giver Workshops
Salemtowne in partnership with The Shepherd's Center provided "Powerful Tools for Caregiving", a class for the community at-large, which discussed techniques for self-care to assist family members responsible for elders such as:
- Deal with Stress
- Reduce Guilt, Anger and Depression
- Communicate with Family, Doctors and Helpers
- Make Legal, Financial, and Residential Decisions
These learning opportunities were provided on the Salemtowne campus at no charge to the public.
